If you have great credit the Blue Cash credit card from American Express could be a great credit card to own. With the Everyday version of Blue Cash there is no annual fee. It’s a given with American Express that you get great customer service.

Cash Back Program

The cash back program has no minimum spending requirement, no enrollment and no restrictive list of categories that you are limited to. The cash back program pays you 3% on grocery purchases, 2% on gas or department store purchases and 1% cash on everything else. Rewards can be redeemed for statement credit, gift cards or merchandise. If you set up a bill paying service for such items as insurance bills, phone bills etc. you can earn cash back on those too.

0% introductory offer

American Express is currently offering a 0% APR introductory offer on purchases for the first year as long as your account is in good standing. There is a relatively high APR of 17.24% to 22.24% after the introductory period is over so it is a good practice to pay off your balance each month.

Travel Discounts/Benefits

The Blue Savings program provides you discounts on hotel stays, car rentals, and cruises. If you book rooms at JW Marriott or Renaissance Hotels you get free breakfast and a $100 discount on your next stay. Card membership also provides you with up to $100,000 in travel accident insurance and delayed or air travel lost baggage insurance up to $2,000

Purchase Refunds

If you suffer from buyer remorse for something you bought using the Blue Cash card and you have lost the receipt or the store refuses to take it back then you are covered with your Blue Cash card. If you find yourself in this position and it is less than 90 days since the purchase American Express will refund you up to $300 per item up to $1,000 annually. This offer does exclude any shipping and handling fees.

No Over Limit Fees

In 2009 American Express removed all over limit fees. If your account is in good standing and you pay your bills on time you will not have to pay a fee for going over your credit limit. See also, American Express Cards

The premium rewards cards available from American Express are the Platinum Card, and the Preferred Rewards Gold Card.

The Platinum Card has a range of benefits with services like 24 hour concierge and attracts no interest charges as long as the balance is paid in full every month.

Cardholders get VIP treatment and have access to some 600 airport lounges across the globe, get comprehensive travel insurance benefits for their families and themselves as well as preferential treatment during travelling like upgrades or companion flight tickets with a 25,000 membership points bonus upon spending the first $1,000 during the first 3 months of membership. The annual fee is $450 and there is no pre-set spending limit. The card is useful for frequent travellers and their families.

The Premier Rewards Gold Card aims at frequent travellers. Upon sign up customers 25,000 points when they spend $2000 in the first three months of card membership. The annual fee is free for the first year then $175 from the second year onwards. The Premier Rewards Gold Card is a charge card thus balances must be paid in full each month. You can earn 3 points on airfare, 2x points on gas and groceries, 1x points on everything else.

Travel Rewards Cards:

The travel reward cards issued by American Express are the Gold Delta Skymiles card and the Starwood Preferred Guests Card. There is no annual fee for the first year, then $95 each year thereafter. The fee is reduced to $45 if you are a qualified American Express Cardmember.

The Starwood Preferred Guest Card is a hotel reward credit card. In recent months, hotel reward programs are increasingly preferred to airline miles cards. The Starwood Preferred Guest card offers 10k bonus points with your first purchase and another 15K when you spend $15,000 within six months. There is no annual fee for the first year, then $65 each year thereafter.

Cashback Card:

One of the American Express offerings in this category is the Blue Cash Everyday card. This card has no annual fee and you can pay your balance over time. What sets this card apart from some other cards in the cash back category is the fact that there are no rotating reward categories. If you miss a payment or you are late with a payment the company charges you a $35.00 fee or 2.99% of the balances whichever is greater. There is also a foreign transaction fee of 2.7% for each transaction.

Points earned through the rewards program can be used for flights on any airline and there are no blackout dates. Reward points can also be used for car rentals, hotels, cruises and vacations if booked online with the American Express Travel site. If you wish you can transfer your earned points to eligible frequent flyer or hotel programs.

Access to events

American Express card membership allows you exclusive access to advance tickets for concerts, shows, and sporting events. As a card member you will receive emails about upcoming events with presale access to tickets. There is even Event Ticket Protection plan in case you are unable to attend an event for which you bought tickets.

Travel benefits are what this card is all about. Card membership allows you access to a variety of luxury travel perks. These include a 24 hour seven day a week concierge service, personalized travel planning, room upgrades at hotels, and discounts on dining. You also earn $400 in free benefits when you book a cruise with the Platinum Travel service.

Airline travel benefits

When you fly if you pay for the trip with your Platinum card you receive $200 in airline fee credits at the airline of your choice to pay for any incidentals during the flight. You also gain access to private airport lounges worldwide through both the Airport Club Access Program and the Priority Pass Select membership program. You have to apply on the American Express Platinum card website for the complimentary Priority Pass Select membership card.

Travel rewards

The rewards program with the Platinum card gains you a 20% travel bonus point which you can use for airline travel or hotels. If you book your hotels through the Platinum Travel service you earn over $450 in complimentary benefits at select luxury hotels. The Platinum destinations vacations program provides customized itineraries and guided tours through partnership programs with other premier travel companies. You also qualify for additional 25,000 bonus points if you book your destination vacation through the Platinum travel service. There is also an annual statement credit of $100 when you book a vacation of $3,000 or more using Platinum Travel services. If you book any travel online through the card website you double your rewards points.

Foreign travel

If you travel overseas there are three benefits available with your Platinum card from American Express that could be helpful. One is the Global Entry program which gets you through customs quicker at most major U.S. airports upon your reentry to the United States. There is an add-on charge for this service but if you apply with your card the company will credit the fee. In addition American Express does not charge a foreign transaction fee for charges made on your card while overseas. If you purchase a qualifying international business class airline ticket you can receive a free companion ticket when booked through the Platinum Travel service.

General American Express benefits

Benefits provided with most American Express cards include 24 hour travel assistance service called Global Assist 24-7 when you are traveling at least 100 miles from home. This assistance can be used to get a new passport, find a doctor or get you legal assistance or any other emergency travel need. You are also covered by travel accident insurance if traveling on a ‘common carrier conveyance’ such as a plane, train, ship, helicopter or bus if you paid for the ticket with your Platinum card. If you rent a car you are also covered by the card for loss or damage to the car if paid for with your Platinum card. If you do a lot of shopping with your Platinum card it is good to know that anything you bought using the card will be covered by the company’s Purchase Protection plan. Anything bought that is lost, stolen or damaged within 90 days of purchase is covered by the Platinum card from American Express.
